Our History

Our History

Guêpes et Papillons was founded in 2014 by Camille Rouvier. In 2015, merely a year later, the brand was launched and its first shop opened in Paris, - 12 Avenue Victor Hugo, only a buzz away from the Arc de Triomphe.

It is upon inheriting her great-grandmother's headdress essentials that Camille was struck by the delicate refinement that those artifacts were carrying. It echoed a distant lifestyle, one of the Court society, which took place at Versailles in the 17th and 18th century. Holding these brushes meant embarking on a time travel. International standards of the luxury industry are defined by an ostentatious but refined elegance with a French touch; when grasping the brushes, Camille was holding its essence. She started her quest for handicraft that embodied this delicacy, and two years later, the soul of Guêpes & Papillons was finally captured.

Nowadays, Guêpes & Papillons demonstrates that the preciseness and patience that handmade work requires are the essence of its beauty. Thus, all materials are selected with uttermost attention: wood, horn, animal hair bristle, brass, silver, copper, precious fabrics...

Under the gracious gaze of a majestic sun and a mischievous moon, the precious casings of handmade fabrics with the customized brushes and combs reveal themselves to the visitors in the recreated intimacy, sensuality and elegance of the 18 century court style.

The origin of the name

This terminology comes from the 17th century. It is delightfully described by Edmé Boursault in his comedy "Les mots à la mode":

"Ce que l'on nomme aujourd'hui Guêpes & Papillons ;
Ce sont les diamants du bout de nos poinçons ;
Qui remuant toujours & jetant milles flammes,
Paraissent voltiger dans les cheveux des dames."
