Horn

Horn

Horn is a natural material that is keratine structured similarly to the hair ; it displays antistatic properties. When in contact with the hair, the horn enables the closure of its scales: the hair is smoother and reflects the light better.

For comb manufacture, Guêpes & Papillons uses cow horn. It originates mainly from West Africa and South America, where cattle farms are extensive which allows farmers to care for the large horns of their cows. In France, young cows are often dehorned to prevent injury because our farms are smaller. No animal is killed for its horn.

Hot working the horn is an essential step in order for it to form plates that the tabletier can then turn into a comb. Once the object is manufactured, it is sanded and polished, which gives it its final shining look and softness.

Horn is a very beautiful material that juggles the light. Its shades range from milky white to honey brown to Jay Black tints. No two horn colours will be the same, which makes each of our products so unique.
